Oxnard College TRIO

TRIO programs are federally funded, serving first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities. Oxnard College hosts two TRIO programs- Upward Bound and Student Support Services (SSS). Upward Bound annually serves 70 students from Channel Islands and Hueneme High Schools. SSS annually serves 140 Oxnard College students.
Our students will tell you that being a part of TRIO at Oxnard College means being a part of a family. This is because our programs are part of a cohort- students are with us from anywhere between one and four plus years. Our programs provide robust holistic counseling, advising, and cultural experiences for students and their families.
Our goal: provide students with the skills, motivation, and support they need to be successful in the pursuit of a college degree/career.
TRIO at Oxnard College believes in and champions our community. Our community is rooted in hard working and dedicated individuals. TRIO thrives on helping the families of our communities continue to reach new heights- what better way to do that than investing in their futures.
TRIO’s History
It began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the administration’s War on Poverty. In 1965, Talent Search, the second outreach program, was created as part of the Higher Education Act. In 1968, Student Support Services, which was originally known as Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, was authorized by the Higher Education Amendments and became the third in a series of educational opportunity programs. By the late 1960’s, the term “TRIO” was coined to describe these federal programs.

Some things in life are worth taking a bet on. TRIO is one such program.
Over 73% of Oxnard College TRIO students are both first-generation and low-income students paving the way toward a college degree not only for themselves, but for their families as well. Many of our students are the first to navigate a system no one in their family has done before. TRIO specifically serves first-generation and low-income students for that very reason. TRIO programs aim to provide the motivation and skills necessary for students to be successful in pursuit of a postsecondary degree.
TRIO has significantly exceeded its program objectives. As an example, the Student Support Services programās actual 2022-2023 persistence rate was 94%, exceeding the baseline objective by 29%. Additionally, the programās 2022-2023 actual good academic standing rate was 94%, exceeding the baseline objective by 19%. The programās exemplary performance in less than 3 years of being established on Oxnard Collegeās campus is evidence of the programās expertise in identifying the factors that contribute to student success.
A donation to TRIO would help further enhance the programās ability to transform lives. Donating to TRIO serves as a symbol of the belief in our communityās future – a bet worth taking.
